The head of Training and Doctrine Command has decided that the time spent on bayonets is better used for something else. The last time an Army unit performed a bayonet charge was in the Korean War.
Now, I'm not qualified to say whether this is a valid point or not. But it strikes me that one can only carry so many rounds of ammunition. When you're in an inhospitable location hundreds of miles from friendly support or resupply a few extra hours spent practicing with the sharp pointy thing that attaches to your now empty rifle might start looking like a good idea.
