There's a number of formerly subscription based MMOs that have shed the subscription model and prospered. In the shadow of the WoW juggernaut it may be the only viable option for most MMOs. But does it pull in enough money over the long term to justify the expense of development?
I think Final Fantasy XI is far enough along in its life-cycle that the F2P model might reinvigorate things, but I doubt Square Enix would be willing to shake things up like that, given the Eternal War they've waged against RMT.
That, and the fact that it's really not in their best interests right now to remind people of FFXI when they've got such problems with their latest and greatest.
